Markus Schubert aims to become Schalke's first-choice keeper

Schalke 04 newcomer Markus Schubert has voiced his ambition to become the club's first-choice goalkeeper.
Markus Schubert was officially presented at Schalke 04 today following his move from Dynamo Dresden on a free transfer.

Sitting next to Schalke head of sport Jochen Schneider at a press conference, the 21-year-old didn't conceal that he aims to become the first-choice keeper at Veltins-Arena.

"Of course my goal here is to be the number one. That's always the aim of a goalkeeper," he told reporters.

Schubert will face tough competition for a starting berth from Alexander Nübel, who had a very strong 2018/19 season, but that doesn't worry him.

"I got to know Alex Nübel during the Under-21 Euros. We get along very well - that was another reason to come here," Schubert said.

Nübel's contract runs until 2020, and Schalke are still working on extending it, head of sport Jochen Schneider confirmed today.
