David Wagner was hoping Breel Embolo would stay at Schalke 04

David Wagner was eager to work with Breel Embolo at Schalke 04, but felt he had to let the striker leave.
Schalke 04 coach David Wagner admits he was excited about the prospect of working with Breel Embolo at the Gelsenkirchen club.

However, the 47-year-old felt he had no choice but to let the striker leave when Gladbach came knocking for him.

"When I looked at the squad after agreeing to come here, Breel was one of the players I was really looking forward to working with," Wagner revealed in an interview with Ruhr Nachrichten and added:

"But Breel and his agent left no doubt from the very beginning that he wanted to leave. He wanted a new beginning, that was communicated clearly and unambiguously.

"It wouldn't have made any sense to refuse to let him leave. Because in our situation, we only need players who want to give 100 percent for Schalke from day one," Wagner said.

Embolo has scored two goals in his first four games for Gladbach.
