This year's incarnation of Eintracht Frankfurt remains very much a work-in-progress. Still seeking their first league win of the season, the SGE must also do without their head-coach during Thursday's Europa League debut against Fenerbahçe at Deutsche Bank Park.
At a Wednesday presser, Oliver Glasner expressed confidence that the team could still give its hometown fans something to cheer about underneath the floodlights.
As if the player personnel issues facing Eintracht Frankfurt weren't enough of a distraction, the struggling SGE must make do without their head-coach in Thursday's Europa League fixture. Oliver Glasner must still serve an outstanding touchline ban dating back to some punctuality issues his Wolfsburg side had during the 2019/20 competition.
At a Wednesday presser, Oliver Glasner expressed confidence that the team could still give its hometown fans something to cheer about underneath the floodlights.
Speaking to members of the assembled media at a Wednesday presser, Glasner sought to project confidence. The 47-year-old spoke of a clear match-plan, which he had already handed over to his assistants.
"Nothing stands in the way of a super Europa League evening," Glasner said, "The lads are fit and motivated. They [Fenerbahçe] have a very, very good team, but they are not used to the intensity of the Bundesliga in their normal routine. We wish to pressure them with our rhythm and dynamism, which may force them into a few errors."
Despite the sluggish start to the season, many of the SGE players have maintained a positive tone in their public comments in recent days. Midfield six Djibril Sow, who appears to now have a workable partner in the newly acquired Kristijan Jakic, told Kicker magazine yesterday that he appreciated the new teammate who "has my back."
Sow also promised "a special evening in Frankfurt". Keeper Kevin Trapp noted that, "The way we've played recently gives us courage and hope". Both Glasner and Sow--in entirely separate media events--emphasized the "Bundesliga intensity" that Frankfurt could pressure their opponents with.
The Frankfurt squad will be run by assistants Michael Angerschmid and Ronald Brunmayr on Thursday night. For his part, Glasner said he would enjoy ensuring that the min-fridge in his luxury box suite would be filled with enough "celebratory materials".
The SGE gaffer's statements notwithstanding, there does exist a cause for concern in the SGE ranks. Starting left-wingback Christopher Lenz's availability remains day-to-day with muscular problems.
Glasner indicated that the staff would run Lenz through a fitness test on Thursday afternoon before making a decision on whether to include the 26-year-old in the squad.
