In addition to long-term absentees Sasa Kalajdzic and Silas Katompa Mvumpa, Stuttgart were without Waldemar Anton, Orel Mangala, Roberto Massimo, Florian Müller and Erik Thommy due to a COVID-19 outbreak in the squad.
Nevertheless, it was the guests, who broke the deadlock against the run of play when Kostas Mavropanos unleashed a thunderbolt into the net in the 15th minute.
Gladbach, dominant in terms of possession and chances created, found the equaliser shortly before the break as Jonas Hofmann scored a wonderful goal from distance.
But despite putting pressure on in the second half, Adi Hütter's troops failed to find the goal they needed to win their third game in a row.
Following tonight's result, Gladbach sit 10th in the Bundesliga, two points ahead of Stuttgart, who are 12th.
