Bayern München defender Benjamin Pavard has defended himself from criticism over his performances for France, telling Canal+ he would like to get more recognition from the French public.

"I don't let the criticism from France get to me, because I left France at a young age," Pavard explained and added:

"I rarely played in Ligue 1, so the French public hardly know me. They probably only noticed me and started taking an interest in me after my goal at the World Cup [in 2018 against Argentina]," added the defender, who left LOSC Lille for VfB Stuttgart in 2016 before moving on to Bayern in 2019.

"On paper, Pavard is probably not as sexy as [Achraf]Hakimi and [Trent] Alexander-Arnold, but I think I'm more complete defensively. I'd like to be more respected in France, but I don't force people to watch the Bundesliga.

"The real observers, who watch football on a regular basis, know exactly what I've done and what I'm still doing."

Pavard has represented his country a total of 40 times. He has played four games for Bayern this season, having missed their last two games due to suspension.
