Widmer reflects on wonder-strike: "The most beautiful goal I've ever scored."

FSV Mainz 05's top summer transfer's first ever Bundesliga goal proved an absolute cracker.

As he prepares to link up with the Swiss national team, Silvan Widmer confirmed that his teammate Yann Sommer was a little less enthused about the milestone.
In a marathon series of interviews after the fact, Silvan Widmer was asked what it felt like to open his scoring account for his new club.

"It was my first ever Bundesliga goal and my first one for Mainz," the 28-year-old reflected on Saturday, "It will remain in my memory for a long time, especially since it was the most beautiful goal I've ever scored thus far."

"It was the shot that I wanted, but it still pretty cool," he added, "Such a hit doesn't go up there in quite that way every time. That's why it perhaps looked a little bit like I was surprised."

Mainz keeper Robin Zentner, who had to wrestle with his own inner demons after making a mistake spill on Gladbach's opening goal on Friday, also found time to praise his club teammate for his amazing equalizer.

"The way he hit it, I think he surprised himself," Zentner said afterwards, "It was a beautiful goal. He hasn't done anything like that in training yet, but I certainly knew that he could do it."

Mainz's main summer transfer target after he impressed during Swizterland's fairy tale run in this summer's Euros was widely lauded as one of the best Bundesliga signings of the offseason.

Widmer has done quite well for his new club thus far, though his first tally felt a little late in coming. It came at the perfect time, though not necessarily from the Swiss national team's perspective.

The former Basel winger finished over Swiss national team hero Yann Sommer of Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Widmer confirmed that he and the Gladbach keeper has exchanged jerseys after the match and talked about the goal.

"Yann was primarily annoyed about it," Widmer noted, "but we joked about it too after the game. We'll probably talk about it again over lunch [next week]."
