Gladbach confirm serious injuries for Swiss duo
Borussia Mönchengladbach let it be known on Saturday that, regarding the two players lost to injury in the 1-1 draw with Mainz on Friday night, the news was not very good.
Neither Breel Embolo nor Nico Elvedi will be able to report for international duty.
The sight of an inconsolable Breel Embolo cradling his head in his hand after having to be subbed off at the half-hour mark Friday night in Mainz conveyed something serious. The 24-year-old had only recently returned from injury and was in quite possibly the best form of his career.
Neither Breel Embolo nor Nico Elvedi will be able to report for international duty.
On Saturday, Borussia Mönchengladbach confirmed that both Embolo and fellow Swiss international Nico Elvedi (subbed off in the 28th) had sustained injuries serious enough that both would have to forgo their call-up to their national team.
According to the club's own information, Embolo suffered a muscle injury in the rear thigh. There is no word on when Embolo can return, but it might be the case that the team's makeshift lead striker will be lost for weeks.
Defender Elvedi's injury may be more serious still. The 25-year-old found himself unable to continue on Friday after suffering a ligament injury on a joint capsule. This could sideline the player for a month or more.
