Germany coach Joachim Löw is attaching too much importance to old merits when he picks his starting eleven, argues Sky's football expert Uli Köhler who believes Manchester City's Leroy Sané and Bayer Leverkusen's Julian Brandt both deserve to start.

"Joachim Löw isn't sticking to his own basic idea that the best players should play. Everyone can see that Boateng and Müller are out of form. Nevertheless, they always play. Your current performance level should have first priority in the national team, because you don't win anything with old merits alone," Köhler told Sky and added:

"Sané needs to start, especially now that he has regained his form. The same goes for Julian Brandt who already shown what he can do at the World Cup. They are the future of German football, but Löw doesn't dare to take this step yet.

Time will tell if Sané and/or Brandt will be given a chance in the line-up when Germany face France in the UEFA Nations League in Paris on Tuesday.
