France Football editor-in-chief Pascal Ferré doesn't want to rule out the possibility of retrospectively handing the 2020 Ballon d'Or to Robert Lewandowski.

Lewandowski was seen as the top favorite to win last year's Ballon d'Or, but it was cancelled by France Football, who hands out the award, because the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the season.

After coming in second place behind Lionel Messi this year, Lewandowski was praised by the Argentine international, who said he believes the Bayern München forward deserves to be given the 2020 trophy.

And Ferré and France Football are now considering whether to do as Messi suggested.

"What Messi said was nice and clever. I think we do not have to make very quick decisions. We can think about it and at the same time we should respect the history of the Ballon d'Or, which is based on voting," Ferré told Watson.

"We can't be sure if Lewandowski would have won the Ballon D'Or last year. We can't know because there was no vote. But, to be honest, Lewandowski would have had a great chance of winning last year," he added.
