Flick: Hummels is not good enough to play for Germany at the moment

Germany coach Hansi Flick says Mats Hummels must improve his performances if he wants to return to the national team.
Borussia Dortmund veteran Mats Hummels is not performing well enough to play for the national team at the moment, according to Germany coach Hansi Flick.

Hummels is yet to receive a call-up for Germany since Flick replaced Joachim Löw as coach last summer.

And speaking to RTL and NTV, Flick says the 32-year-old central defender must improve to get back in contention.

"At the moment he does not have the required level and quality in his game. But we know that he has quality," said Flick.

"I also know, when I see him like this and talk to him as well, that he has a few small problems."

Looking ahead to the World Cup in Qatar at the end of next year, Flick said:

"We are keeping the door open for all those who have enormous quality, who can help us progress."

Hummels has featured 76 times for Germany, scoring five goals.
