Borussia Dortmund want to tie Manuel Akanji down to a new long-term contract, head of first team football Sebastian Kehl has confirmed.

"Manuel is an absolute leader, who played all the games for us when he was fit. He is a very important factor for us in the defense and has developed very well," Kehl told Sport Bild.

"We have very great confidence in his abilities, so of course we will try to extend his contract, which runs until 2023," he added.

According to Sport Bild, Dortmund want to extend Akanji's contract until 2026.

The centre-back made his return from a knee injury in last week's 5-1 win over Freiburg.
