Flick explains surprise call-up for Weigl: "We need an alternative to Kimmich"

Germany coach Hansi Flick has explained that Julian Weigl has been called up as a back-up for Joshua Kimmich.
After a five-year absence, Julian Weigl is back in the national team set-up, having been called up for Germany's upcoming friendlies against Israel and the Netherlands.

The 26-year-old Benfica midfielder has been included as Germany coach Hansi Flick has seen the need for another player with the ability to be a "stabilizer" in midfield.

"We need an alternative to 'Jo' Kimmich," Flick was quoted of saying by DPA.

"Julian hasn't been there for a long time. We know what he can do, but we also want to see him live," he added.

Weigl has featured 41 times for Benfica this season, racking up three goals and five assists.

The former Borussia Dortmund player has played five times for Germany and last represented his country in a friendly against England in March 2017.
