Virkus confirms Gladbach are fighting to keep a number of key players

Gladbach sporting director Roland Virkus insists he is doing alle he can to hold on to Yann Sommer, Jonas Hofmann, Alassane Plea, Breel Embolo and Marcus Thuram.
Borussia Mönchengladbach are fighting to keep a number of players, who are out of contract in 2023, including Yann Sommer, Jonas Hofmann, Alassane Plea, Breel Embolo and Marcus Thuram.

"Yann Sommer and Jonas Hofmann are pillars of our team and should remain so in the coming years. They would play a very important role in our plan to build something new," Gladbach sporting director Roland Virkus told Kicker.

"The same goes for our strikers. I will fight for the boys," added Virkus, referring to Alassane Plea, Breel Embolo and Marcus Thuram.

"Basically, I don't want to sell any of the guys. But it's also about what their personal plans are. I can rule out that they're pursuing other goals. In the event that we don't come to an agreement, we would have to consider how to resolve the situation."

Asked if Ramy Bensebaini, who is also out of contract in 2023, and Florian Neuhaus, whose deal expires in 2024, could leave the club, Virkus responded:

"We have a lot of interesting players in our squad. One of them wants to leave. But you have to understand that I don't want to tell you who that is right now."
