Kahn rules out signing Haaland, provides update on Lewandowski contract talks
In an interview with Sport1, Bayern München CEO Oliver Kahn ruled out the possibility of signing Erling Haaland and spoke about the club's ongoing contract talks with Robert Lewandowski.
Oliver Kahn has ruled Bayern München out of the race for Erling Haaland, admitting that the sought-after Borussia Dortmund striker is too expensive for the German champions.
"We wouldn't be doing our job properly if we didn't look at a young striker like him," the Bayern CEO told Sport1.
"He's an excellent forward, and a highly interesting player for the future. But the financial dimensions are beyond our imagination."
Therefore, Bayern will have to look elsewhere for a long-term replacement for the aging Robert Lewandowski.
Lewandowski, 33, has been linked with a move away from Bayern in recent months, but Kahn has previously underlined that the Polish international will "definitely" still be in Munich next season.
But if Bayern want to keep him for longer than that, they will have to agree on a new deal beyond 2023.
"As of today, Robert has a contract with us. We're currently in contact with him and we want him to stay at Bayern for as long as possible," said Kahn.
"Some people seem to think it's like an online manager game, where you click on something to extend the contract. Robert has become the world's best footballer with us, scoring 30 to 40 goals every season. He has the potential to achieve that every season.
"Of course, players like that sometimes think about trying something else and it takes time to convince them. There are also financial aspects to consider, and as a club you have to think about how to manage that because FC Bayern have suffered from the pandemic in the last two years."
