Report: Mainz interested in Bielefeld's Pieper

Mainz's "Allgemeine Zeitung" reports that the local club has Germany U21 international Amos Pieper in mind as a potential replacement for Jeremiah St. Juste.
With there Rheinhessen about to drop a defender from the roster, Mainz's local newspaper reports that the local club's administrative team wishes to bring in Germany youth international Amos Pieper as a replacement. The 24-year-old--on an expiring contract at almost-certain-to-be relegated Arminia Bielefeld--is available to any club that may wish to sign him on a free.

Pieper doesn't enjoy quite the same cache as he did last spring. As part of the Stefan Kuntz U21 squad that won the 2021 UEFA U21 European Championship, Pieper was considered by many to be one of German football's biggest up-and-comers. There were even some calls for him to be given a trail with the senior German men's national team.

Though his, along with his current club's season, has been rather disappointing, Pieper remains a player valued at €7 million in the latest transfermarkt listings. It can be assumed that the central defender will not playing next year with the DSC in the second division. Pieper was at one time linked with Dortmund, but the Schwarzgelben are likely done shopping for center backs after the acquisitions of Niklas Süle and Nico Schlotterbeck.
