In what turned out to be a tumultuous and difficult season for Borussia Mönchengladbach, 19-year-old American youngster Joe Scally broke into the first team and went on to feature in 30 of 34 Bundesliga games.

"I think it was a pretty good season for me personally," Scally told Bild, looking back on his 2021/22 campaign.

"I played a lot more than I thought I would and learned a lot of things. I want to build on that and continue to improve now."

As a recognition for his performances, the young full-back was nominated for the Golden Boy award that Italian publication newspaper Tuttosport gives out to the best under-21 player in Europe every year.

"I am very proud of this nomination. When you see who has already won this award, it is just a great honor. I can still be nominated next year. It's just cool. It would be great if I could win this award someday," said Scally.

The 19-year-old full-back will now be looking to continue his development under new Gladbach coach Daniel Farke.

"I like him a lot. He's a really good coach and speaks perfect English because of his past at Norwich. That's very comfortable for me because it just makes communication easier. He has his own philosophy, his own style. I'm really looking forward to working with him," said Scally, who is really hoping that he will make the United States' World Cup squad:

"If I get to travel to the World Cup with the national team in November, this will be an extraordinary season for me. I think we've got a good group. If we manage to assert ourselves there and advance, anything is possible. We'll see how far we can go," he noted.
