Official: Embolo departs Gladbach for Monaco

Former FC Schalke 04 and Borussia Mönchengladbach striker Breel Embolo's transfer to AS Monaco was made official on Friday evening.
After confirming reports that striker Breel Embolo's move to Monaco was imminent, Borussia Mönchengladbach sporting director Roland Virkus noted that "a solution that satisfies everyone" had been obtained shortly after the Ligue 1 club unveiled their new attacker on Friday evening. Virkus also again emphasized that the player himself wanted the move, saying that "Breel had approached us with the desire to do something different."

The 25-year-old Swiss international initially joined German football on a whopping €22.5 million transfer from FC Basel to FC Schalke 04 in 2016. The Königsblauen then unloaded him for a mere €11 million to Gladbach three years later. The transfer bust was largely considered to be one of the biggest mistakes of the administrative regime that caused Schalke's humiliating collapse in recent years. Former S04 executive Jochen Schneider was forced to answer for it about it shortly after his sacking in 2021.

Thanks to the fact that Embolo was able to regain some form last season, the foals were able to secure €12.5 transfer fee for him. Embolo scored nine goals for Gladbach last season, a personal best for his career. He departs German football having scored 37 times for Schalke and Gladbach across all competitions.
