Official: Union extend with Fischer and assistant coach

Current Bundesliga table-toppers 1. FC Union Berlin have taken care of business and signed their eminently successful head-coach Urs Fischer to a contract extension. Fischer's co-trainer also receives a new contract.
Urs Fischer and assistant coach Markus Hofmann have extended their contract with league-leaders 1. FC Union Berlin beyond the current season. The precise length of the exemptions were not divulged, with the Köpenick club instead preferring to focus on how unproblematic the talks were.

"The cooperation with Urs Fischer and Markus Hoffmann has been very successful," Managing Director Oliver Ruhnert noted in a statement accompanying the signing, "We now know each other very well and know what makes each other tick. That helps us immensely in our day-to-day work, so I'm very pleased to have continuity in these important positions."

"Urs Fischer is an excellent coach who, together with the entire coaching team, has led us to the most successful phase of our club's history," club President Dirk Zingler added, "Our cooperation is characterized by great respect and mutual trust. Hence, for all of us, there was essentially no question that we would like to continue our successful cooperation."

"What we have been able to experience together in recent years is incredible," Fischer himself noted, "As I have often emphasized, I feel very comfortable at Union. The daily work together with the team and the entire team and the conditions that the club provides have been a very important factors for our success in the past four years."

Fischer's patented "3-5-2 double stack" tactical constellation has remained unchanged since the start of the 2020/21 Bundesliga campaign, the second-ever season that the Köpenickers found themselves in Germany's top footballing flight. Every year in the top division has brought with it new successes.

Fischer initially came on board with Union in 2017, making him second to Freiburg's Christian Streich with respect to the current Bundesliga field's longest-serving trainer.
