Leipzig upset Real Madrid and inch closer to knockout stage
RB Leipzig defeated the Spanish giants 3-2 at the Red Bull Arena through decisive center-back play and Christopher Nkunku's creativity on the offensive end.
With Celtic's draw to Shakhtar Donetsk combined with Leipzig's surprising win, the Red Bull club nearly secured a spot in the Champions League round of 16. They'll need a draw next week against the Ukrainian side to advance to the knockout round.
It was a fairly even start to the game, but Leipzig moved ahead following poor defensive play from Real Madrid on a corner in the 13th minute. Thibaut Courtois saved Andre Silva's strong header, but Josko Gvardiol put away the follow-up to earn Leipzig an early lead.
A few minutes later, Christopher Nkunku got around Courtois, but could only find the side-netting. Then, in the 18th minute, Carlo Ancelotti's side failed to convincingly clear the ball and Nkunku secured a well-deserved goal.
Madrid improved as the half wore on and a super Vincius Jr. header narrowly snuck past Janis Blaswich to halve Leipzig's advantage just before halftime.
Leipzig decided to give up more possession in the second half for greater defensive stability. Willi Orban and Gvardiol seemed confident and stood their ground admirably through several threatening Madrid phases.
Finally, Timo Werner wrapped up the contest after he converted Mohamed Simakan's deft cross in the 81st minute. Rodrygo scored a 94th minute penalty, but it turned out to be the last kick of the game.
Leipzig play Leverkusen at home this weekend before wrapping up the Champions League group stage with a massive game against Shakhtar Donetsk next week.
