Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke believes the German youth development is faltering, and he claims that represents the biggest challenge in German football.

"We have come a little away from our good path in regard to the German talent development. At the moment, I don't feel we're in a good position at this area. I particularly believe we've become weaker among the 16 to 20 year-olds," Watzke told Bild and added:

"We are now also bringing in some very young players from abroad, such as Jadon Sancho. I consider it the biggest sporting challenge to put our entire youth concept to the test."

A few months ago, Germany under-21 coach Stefan Kuntz also expressed concern over the youth prospects in German football.

"We used to have seven exceptional talents in each age class - now there are two. And the Bundesliga teams increasingly attract players from abroad - even if they prefer talent from the neighborhood. The fact is: In two or three years, we could be heading for a trough," he said in an interview with Sportbuzzer.
