Freiburg extend with back-up keeper Uphoff

SC Freiburg confirmed a contract extension with back-up keeper Benjamin Uphoff on Wednesday afternoon.
Having already tied down Mark Flekken's presumed successor Noah Atubolu with a contract extension earlier this year, SC Freiburg have also announced plans to carry on with current back-up net-minder Benjamin Uphoff. The 29-year-old former KSC backstop signed a contract extension on Wednesday. Details on the length of the new deal, as per usual in Breisgau, were not disclosed.

Club personnel boss Klemens Hartenbach called Uphoff a "stable part of our goalkeeping trio" and emphasized the Freiburg looked forward to calling upon his "quality and reliability" in the future. The player himself expressed gratitude at being part of the "SCF goalkeeping group" and stressed that he would always be ready if called upon.

It is not known how long Flekken's current deal runs for. The Dutch international has started all 25 of Freiburg's league fixtures this season, making way for Atubolu in the team's two DFB Pokal ties. Uphoff has not made an appearance since last season, during which he made some notable errors in a pair of starts between the sticks.
