Borussia Dortmund are set to complete the signing of Boca Juniors defender Leonardo Balerdi who's expected to sign a five-year deal today, Bild reports.
The 19-year-old is considered an investment in the future, but he could get to play a role in the first team this season already as Manuel Akanji could be out for the rest of the season if it's deemed he needs groin surgery. A decision on this is expected to be made early this week.
However, the Argentine defender will most likely not be available when the Bundesliga returns in the weekend. The centre-back is set to fly to Chile on Wednesday to participate in the 2019 South American U-20 Championship which will be held between January 17 and February 10. Dortmund are doing what they can to keep him in Germany, though.
Akanji isn't the only BVB centre-back who has had injury problems recently. Dan-Axel Zagadou and Abdou Diallo both suffered injuries before Christmas and are fighting to return to full fitness in time for Saturday's game against RB Leipzig.
