Three days ago, Fortuna Düsseldorf announced that Friedhelm Funkel will leave his position as head coach when his contract runs out this summer as it wasn't possible to reach an agreement on a new deal.

As a result thereof, the 65-year-old even announced that he wanted to put his career to an end.

However, after intense fan protests, the popular head coach is now expected to extend his deal with Fortuna Düsseldorf. In fact, club boss Robert Schäfer feels sure that an agreement will be reached before the game against Augsburg this weekend.

"The fans were rightfully angry. I can understand their anger. We've corrected the mistake," Schäfer told Bild and added:

"On Tuesday, we will sit down together. We will reach and agremeent with Friedhelm before the Augsburg game."

According to Bild, Funkel wants to sign a one-year extension that will only become active if Fortuna Düsseldorf stay in the Bundesliga. If they get relegated, the club have to find a new coach.

Fortuna Düsseldorf are sitting 14th before the second half of the season.
