Wolfsburg vs. Augsburg preview: Die Wölfe continue European push

Seventh-placed Wolfsburg will continue their quest for the European places when they face Augsburg on Saturday.

Wolfsburg

Prior to the international break, Wolfsburg extended their unbeaten run to four matches with a narrow away win over Stuttgart. Omar Marmoush scored against his former club to guide Wolfsburg to a second straight away victory. The result also represented Wolfsburg's 10th clean sheet of the Bundesliga season - no side has recorded more and only Freiburg can match that figure.

Die Wölfe are just two points adrift of the top six, but if they are to qualify for European competition then they will have to improve upon their recent away form. Wolfsburg are winless in four home matches, although they did face difficult opposition, losing to Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig before playing out draws with Eintracht Frankfurt and Union Berlin.

Having avoided defeat in their last five home meetings with Augsburg, the hosts will certainly be confident that they can claim a positive result on Saturday.

Wolfsburg are expected to be without the services of Lukas Nmecha, Kilian Fischer and Bartol Franjic due to injury issues.

Augsburg have had two weeks to reflect on a 1-1 draw with Schalke 04, where they were just minutes away from claiming all three points. The Fuggerstädter opened the scoring through Arne Maier in the 51st minute, but they gave away a penalty in stoppage time, allowing Marius Bülter to score a late equaliser.

Despite missing out on two extra points, Augsburg will be content with their current eight-point gap to the bottom three.

However, Augsburg boss Enrico Maaßen will be far from pleased with the club's away form. Since beating Schalke 3-2 in October, Augsburg have picked up just one point from eight away league games. Having lost their last five matches on the road, Augsburg are at risk of equalling a club record of six consecutive away defeats in the Bundesliga.

Niklas Dorsch, Kelvin Yeboah, Felix Uduokhai, Andre Hahn and Tobias Strobl are ruled out through injury. Meanwhile, Ermedin Demirovic and Reece Oxford are both suspended.
