Friedhelm Funkel has signed a new contract with Fortuna Düsseldorf and will remain head coach until 2020 if the club stay in the Bundesliga.

Fortuna initially announced that Funkel would leave the club in the summer as it wasn't possible to reach an agreement on a new deal, but after intense fan protests, the club chose to negotiate with the 65-year-old again.

"We are very pleased that we were able to reach the agreement that Fortuna Düsseldorf wanted," Fortuna CEO Robert Schäfer said, as quoted on the club's website.

Funkel is now ready to put all focus on the second half of the season.

"My great wish was always to continue working with my great staff as well as this incorruptible team. I'm very happy that we were able to reach an agreement during the winter break. Now, we can focus on the important second half of the season with the necessary calmness," he said.

Fortuna Düsseldorf will face FC Augsburg away from home this Saturday.
