Stanisic "surprised" by move from Bayern to Leverkusen
Josip Stanisic has opened up about his loan move from Bayern to Bayer Leverkusen, admitting that the transfer came as a "surprise" to him.
Josip Stanisic recently joined Bayer Leverkusen on a season-long loan from Bayern Munich.
Discussing the move in an interview with Bild, Stanisic admits he was surprised that Bayern were willing to let him join a direct rival.
"I was a bit surprised. But I see it positively. If I had stayed at Bayern, I might not have played as much as I have here. I see it as an opportunity. I want to play as many games as possible and help the team. The clubs have agreed and it's the right decision for me," Stanisic said.
Speaking about the days leading up to the transfer, Stanisic said:
"I knew about my position in Munich and that it is always difficult to play there. That's how it was during the pre-season. I did my best and hoped for my chance. At some point it became clear that Noussair Mazraoui had established himself [at right-back]. I knew that if Benjamin Pavard stayed, it would be very difficult for me to get playing time.
"The talks with Leverkusen were very positive from the start and I was really ready for it. That's how it went. It was a back and forth. Is Benji staying? Is he going? Am I staying? I was up in the air a little bit. I think it was the right decision because I have a great team here, a great coach and hopefully I'll get a lot of playing time. I want to make the most of it."
