Markus Weinzierl lost his job as VfB Stuttgart coach after the Swabian club were thrashed 6-0 by Augsburg on Saturday.

Speaking in an interview with Sky, Stuttgart head of sport Thomas Hitzlsperger has explained the decision.

"I tried to maintain continuity and to stay in the league with Markus Weinzierl. But after the last weeks and yesterday's game, we had to think it all through again and question everything. That's why it came to the decision yesterday. I think it was the right move," he told Sky and added:

"We were all brutally disappointed and therefore sat down together after returning from Augsburg. Markus was just as disappointed as I was when we talked to him, but we are all professionals, and we have to make tough decisions."

Nico Willig, the coach of Stuttgart's under-19 team, has taken over the job as head coach until the end of the season.

VfB Stuttgart are sitting 16th in the Bundesliga table with four games left to play this season.
