BVB boss: We wanted to sign players who know what it means to compete with Bayern

Borussia Dortmund's new signings know what it means to compete with Bayern München, says BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke.
In Nico Schulz, Julian Brandt, Thorgan Hazard and Mats Hummels, Borussia Dortmund have brought in four players from other Bundesliga clubs this summer - and that is no coincidence, says BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke.

BVB were narrowly beaten by Bayern München in last season's title race, and Watzke hopes that the newcomers can help the club to their first Bundesliga title since 2012.

"We wanted to get players from the Bundesliga who know what is means when we say that we want to compete with Bayern for the title. You have to adjust your transfers and can't just get three 19-year-old's for that," Watzke told Sport1 and added:

"What we lacked the most was the maturity to take part in a title race. We didn't have that maturity when we won the title in 2011 either, but we did when we one the second one a year later. But back then, the Bavarians were much weaker."

Bayern München finished the 2018/19 season with two points more than Dortmund.
