Borussia Dortmund have not only improved their quality, but also their squad depth with their new signings this summer.

With the arrivals of Julian Brandt (Bayer Leverkusen, €25 million), Nico Schulz (Hoffenheim, €25,5 million), Thorgan Hazard (Gladbach, €25,5 million) and Mats Hummels (Bayern München, €30,5 million), Dortmund now have at least two good options at each position, says BVB sporting director Michael Zorc.

"Our transfers have first and foremost improved our quality, but have also put us in a better position in terms of squad depth. We have two players for each position and have adequate replacements if a player gets injured," Zorc said in an interview with Sport Bild.

"We pay attention to the fact that the balance between incomes and outcomes is right. In the past years, we have regularly been making more money than we have spent in the transfer department, so we decided to invest more money in our team this summer," he added.

Mats Hummels is expected to form a partnership with Manuel Akanji in central defence, with Julian Weigl, Abdou Diallo and Dan-Axel Zagadou providing back-up. The latter three have also been linked with other clubs, and time will tell if one of them will leave the club.

Further up the pitch, Julian Brandt and Thorgan Hazard offer new offensive firepower which will most likely make Dortmund coach Lucien Favre change his preferred system to a 4-1-4-1 instead of the 4-2-3-1 formation that he often used last season.

Here is Dortmund's expected line-up for the 2019/20 season as well as the preferred alternatives at each position:

Roman Bürki (Marwin Hitz)

Achraf Hakimi (Lukasz Piszczek)
Manuel Akanji (Julian Weigl)
Mats Hummels (Dan-Axel Zagadou/Abdou Diallo)
Nico Schulz (Marcel Schmelzer)

Axel Witsel (Thomas Delaney)

Jadon Sancho (Marius Wolf)
Julian Brandt (Mahmoud Dahoud)
Marco Reus (Sergi Gomez)
Thorgan Hazard (Jacob Bruun Larsen)

Mario Götze (Paco Alcacer)
