Mateta ruled out for at least three months

Jean-Philippe Mateta faces a long spell on the sidelines.
Mainz 05 striker Jean-Philippe Mateta is expected to be sidelined for at least three months, the club have announced.

The French striker suffered a meniscus injury in training last week and subsequently underwent an operation on his right knee on Monday.

"The news on the time out is very difficult to take, as we will now be without one of our best goal scorers from the previous season for the next few months," said Mainz sporting director Rouven Schröder, as quoted by the club.

"Due to this and the injury to Dong-Wong Ji, we will now look into the market for players that meet our footballing and financial criteria in order to replace the quality that we have lost in the short-term," he added.

Mateta scored 14 goals in 34 Bundesliga appearances for Mainz last season.
