Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke remains hopeful that it will be possible to extend Raphael Guerreiro's contract beyond 2020.

"We would like to extend the contract. We have been trying to do so for months. But the player has to play along as well. Michael Zorc has already started holding talks. It should all become clearer in the next few days or weeks," Watzke told Sky.

Should it not be possible to reach an agreement with Guerreiro, BVB might have to sell him to avoid losing him for free next summer when his contract expires.

"We have to think financially. We can't let him go for free. Our very clear objective is that we want him to play for BVB this season - but we also want him to renew his contract," Watzke said and added:

"We have made an effort and made him a good offer. We would be happy if he would accept at short notice. We are stronger with him than without him."

Guerreiro has returned to training today after he was ruled out of Borussia Dortmund's 5-1 win over Augsburg on Saturday due to a muscle injury.
