Oliver Kahn believes Schalke 04 captain Alexander Nübel has the quality to play for the German national team in the future.

At this point, however, the 23-year-old faces extremely tough competition from Manuel Neuer and Marc-André ter Stegen.

"His development has been very fast and impressive. He has not only put in top performances at Schalke, but is now already the captain of the club at the age of 23. I think it's important to experience what it means to take on responsibility at an early age," Kahn told Kicker and added:

"He has the quality [to play for the national team] in the future. But at the moment, we have an absolute top goalkeeper in the experienced Manuel Neuer as well as a class goalkeeper in Marc-André ter Stegen who does excellently at Barcelona.

Schalke are desperately trying to hold on to Nübel whose contract runs out at the end of the season.
