Lothar Matthäus: Alex Nübel should be joining Bayern in January

Lothar Matthäus believes Alex Nübel should leave Schalke 04 during the winter transfer window.
Schalke 04 recently announced that Alex Nübel will be leaving the club when his contract expires at the end of the season, with reports claiming that the highly-rated goalkeeper is set to join Bayern München in the summer of 2020.

However, former German international Lothar Matthäus believes it would be best for all parties if the 23-year-old would leave Schalke in January.

"Nübel has no future at Schalke, because he will have to deal with a lot of criticism. He is suspended for the next games, [Markus] Schubert is a good replacement for him, and [Schalke coach] David Wagner can't afford to accept his own captain being whistled at every game and jeopardize his team's performance," Matthäus wrote in a column for Sky and added:

"If he had moved to Barcelona, Madrid or Manchester to be the first-choice goalkeeper, the fans would have understood his decision. But a switch to the Bayern bench is unacceptable for fans of 'The Royal Blues'.

"The best thing for Nübel and all concerned would be for him to move to Munich in the winter," Matthäus stated.

Nübel has made 17 appearances for Schalke 04 this season.
