Xaver Schlager explains his decision to join Wolfsburg from Salzburg

Xaver Schlager has explained why he wanted to leave RB Salzburg to join Wolfsburg in the summer of 2019.
Xaver Schlager has opened up on his decision to leave RB Salzburg to join Wolfsburg last summer.

The 22-year-old also attracted interest from the likes of RB Leipzig and Borussia Mönchengladbach, but opted for a move to Volkswagen Arena.

Asked to explain his decision, Schlager told Sport Bild:

"We have a similar playing style here in Wolfsburg. And it's more quiet here. The fans don't get restless after three successive defeats, and nobody thinks we'll be champions if we win three games. This makes it easier for me to develop.

"Playing in the Champions League with Salzburg would have been cool, of course, but in the Bundesliga, you have eight Champions League games against Bayern, Dortmund, Leipzig and Leverkusen alone. I have big goals. You have to move forward quickly to achieve them," the central midfielder said.

Schlager, who missed a large chunk of the first half of the season due to an ankle injury, has played nine games for Wolfsburg so far, scoring once and making one assist.
