Erling Haaland took the right step when he opted to join Borussia Dortmund from RB Salzburg, argues former Norwegian international Jan Åge Fjørtoft.

The 19-year-old also attracted interest from the likes of Manchester United, Juventus and RB Leipzig following his impressive performances in the Champions League, but Fjørtoft believes his compatriot was wise to choose a move to Signal Iduna Park.

"Scoring eight goals in the Champions League is sensational no matter if you're 19 or 31 years old. In terms of potential, Haaland is capable of playing in the Bundesliga. But he will still need time to develop. After all, footballers are just people and not machines that will work right away after you start them up," the former Eintracht Frankfurt player wrote in a column for Kicker and added:

"Just like any 19-year-old, he will sometimes take a step forward and one step back, then maybe two steps forward and one step back again. That's why I think Dortmund is the right place for him. Borussia have a good tradition of developing young players in an excellent way.

"Leipzig were another option from the Bundesliga, because RB's philosophy is similar to the one in Salzburg. Nevertheless, the step to Dortmund makes more sense. After Haaland's performances in the Champions League, he obviously really wants to play regularly. This is easier to achieve at Borussia," Fjørtoft stated.

Haaland signed a contract with Dortmund until 2024.
