Agent: Alex Nübel wants to displace Neuer in the medium term

Alex Nübel's agent, Stefan Backs, has defended his client's decision to join Bayern München from Schalke 04.
Alex Nübel's agent, Stefan Backs, says his client will be joining Bayern München with the clear ambition to take over the number one shirt from Manuel Neuer with time.

Nübel has faced criticism following the announcement that he will be joining Bayern from Schalke 04 in the summer, with some claiming that the 23-year-old will struggle to find regular playing time at Allianz Arena.

But Stefan Backs isn't concerned that Nübel's development will suffer even though the young goalkeeper will probably have to settle for the Bayern bench at first.

"Manuel Neuer is probably the best German goalkeeper ever. Alex can learn a lot in training and on the pitch. When he came to Schalke, he continued to develop, even without match practice, until he replaced Ralf Fährmann," Backs said in an interview with 11Freunde and added:

"Alex wants to displace Neuer in the medium term. When you join Bayern, you have to assert yourself there. Neuer is a world-class goalkeeper, but every newcomer has a world-class player in front of him at Bayern. [Joshua] Kimmich and [Alphonso] Davies were in the same situation. We'll see in three years time whether Alex chose the right path. But he's determined and ready."

Nübel has signed a five-year deal with Bayern.
