By Henrik Petersen

After generating a surplus of 40.5 million euros in the 2018-season, the club landed red figures in the fiscal year for 2019.

Despite the loss, Peter Peters, Chief Executive Officer of Schalke 04, told Der Spiegel that the operational business is "extremely robust in its core elements".

Behind us is a season, in which the sporting goals were clearly missed. Nevertheless, we have a very broad base that ensures the financial stability of the club even without international games.

The lower revenue is a result of missing out on transfer options while also finishing 14th in the 2018/2019 Bundesliga season.

Not optimistic for 2020
The club is not optimistic about the current year. Even without considering the effects of the corona crisis, Schalke is expecting a new loss of more than 10 million euros.

Adding the effects of the pandemic will only make that budget even worse.

But Peters is not too worried about the crisis, unless it turns into something more permanent, in which case all clubs are threatened.

But that is not where Schalke is at the moment.

Currently the management is awaiting the situation and will take action as more information becomes available about the epidemic.
