Lothar Matthäus: 'Bayern remain favorites for the title'

Lothar Matthäus believes Bayern München are favorites to win the Bundesliga this season.
Former German international Lothar Matthäus sees Bayern München as favorites to win the Bundesliga title ahead of the resumption of Germany's top flight on Saturday.

With nine games left to play, the reigning champions sit four points clear of Borussia Dortmund and five points above RB Leipzig at the top of the table.

And if Bayern pick up where they left off before the league was put on ice, Matthäus believes they will go on to win their eighth league title in a row.

"For me, Bayern remain favorites for the title. Not only because they are four points ahead, but also because I can remember the way they performed a few weeks ago. They were dominant and confident in every game. And they used their involuntary break to ensure calmness, clarity and continuity," Matthäus wrote in a column for Sky and added:

"They extended important contracts, such as those of Hansi Flick and Thomas Müller. There are still a few problems as to their talks with Manuel Neuer. But I think that will soon be cleared up, too.

"Nevertheless, it remains exciting, at least if Dortmund win their home game against the record champions. Against Gladbach and Leverkusen, Bayern will not be gifted any points either."

Bayern face Union Berlin away from home on Sunday.
