Germany coach Joachim Löw hails Leon Goretzka for his development at Bayern

Germany coach Joachim Löw praises Leon Goretzka and speaks about the 25-year-old's role in the national team.
Germany coach Joachim Löw has lavished praise on Leon Goretzka for his recent development at Bayern München.

Goretzka has been in excellent form since the Bundesliga's return, chipping in with two goals and three assists in his last five games, and Löw has been very impressed with what he has seen from the 25-year-old lately.

"His recent development in particular is very pleasing. Leon has achieved a very good position for Bayern München," Löw said in an interview with Kicker:

"He recently told me on the phone that he feels better than ever before. He worked really hard during the corona period."

Over the years, Goretzka has played in various roles for the German national team. Asked what he believes is the 25-year-old's best position, Löw responded:

"His abilities are best suited for a central position, as a number 10 or a number 8. But he can also play at the number six position."

"He's good at combining with his teammates, is very dynamic, has very good technique and good vision. What distinguishes him in particular is his ability to push forward and score goals. Leon knows that he can score with his right foot, left foot or with his head. That's why I see him in a central position in the coming years."

Löw then went on to reveal that he was actually planning to play Goretzka at right-back in the past, but he never tested his idea.

"He has never played that position before, so adjusting to it would require games and a lot of training," Löw explained and added:

"But with his dynamics, ability on the ball and understanding of the game, it was a possibility."
