Schalke 04 head of sport Jochen Schneider has confirmed that David Wagner will stay on as coach despite a poor run of results.

After an impressive first half of the season, Schalke fell into a slump and ended up 12th after failing to win their last 16 Bundesliga games.

Although Schneider admits he isn't satisfied with the results in 2020 so far, he points out that Wagner has had to manage without a number of important players in recent weeks, including Amine Harit, Omar Mascarell and Suat Serdar, who are all out with long-term injuries.

The Schalke boss is confident that Wagner can bring the team back on track next season when he should have a full squad to choose from once again.

"On the pitch, things have been really poor recently, there's no doubt about that. We're looking at the situation neutrally, with a clear head. We can't get carried away anymore," Schneider said at a press conference on Wednesday.

"We played attractive football when we had the majority of our squad available to us, so we will carry on with the current coaching team. I have a lot trust in them."

Wagner said he believes a number of factors have resulted in Schalke's poor run of form.

"A few things meant that we had a completely different team from mid-February. We couldn't compensate for the injured players. Our two goalkeepers were no longer as reliable and the January transfer window didn't go well," he said.
