"I had six great years at an amazing club with special people here in Freiburg. I can look back happily on the time I spent here," said Frantz, who has been Freiburg captain for the last two seasons, in a statement.
"We experienced everything: relegation, immediate promotion, survival, Europa League qualification and then a strong eighth-place finish in my final season. I arrived as a good player and I’ve left as an improved, better one," he added.
Freiburg sporting director Jochen Saier commented:
"We can look back on a successful and great time together. Mike was a popular figure and a key member of our side in the past six years. After the team chose him as the new captain, he took over a lot of responsibility both on and off the pitch.
"Mike didn't start as often as he would have liked to last season, so we were happy for him to find a new sporting challenge, and we would like to thank him from the bottom of our hearts."
Frantz, 33, made a total of 162 appearances for Freiburg with 13 goals and 15 assists to his name.
