Bayer Leverkusen crashed out of the Europa League at the quarter-finals stage with a 2-1 defeat to Inter on neutral ground at the Merkur Spiel-Arena in Düsseldorf.

Nicolo Barella broke the deadlock for Inter after 15 minutes as he scored with the outside of his foot from the edge of the area.

Six minutes later, Romelu Lukaku doubled the lead for the Serie A side. The Belgian striker used his strength well to hold off Edmond Tapsoba in the box before rolling the ball past Lukas Hradecky in the Bayer net.

Leverkusen then went up to score at the other end, pulling one back through Kai Havertz, who sent the ball underneath Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic after receiving the ball from Kevin Volland inside the box.

A few minutes later, the referee pointed to the penalty spot after the ball appeared to have hit Leverkusen defender Daley Sinkgaven's arm, but the decision was overturned after a var review.

Inter created numerous big chances to kill off the game after the break, but Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky did well to keep him team in the tie with numerous saves before 'Nerazzurri' had another penalty decision overturned.

Although Leverkusen stayed in the game until the very end, 'Die Werkself' struggled to put Inter under pressure and never managed to find the equaliser.
