Germany forced to settle for draw with Spain after conceding late equaliser
Germany had to settle for a draw against Spain after José Gaya's late equaliser cancelled out Timo Werner's opener.
Germany conceded an injury-time equaliser as they drew 1-1 with Spain in the UEFA Nations League on Thursday at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Stuttgart.
Timo Werner broke the deadlock in the beginning of the second half, smashing the ball into the net from inside the box after he was teed up by debutant Robin Gosens.
It looked like a win for Joachim Löw's troops heading into injury time, but José Gaya salvaged a draw for the guests in the 96th minute after Rodrigo headed the ball across goal to him.
'Die Mannschaft' rested a number of key players, including Manuel Neuer, Joshua Kimmich and Serge Gnabry, after their involvement in the Champions League final tournament in Lisbon last month.
With Neuer rested and Marc-André ter Stegen ruled out with a knee injury, Eintracht Frankfurt's Kevin Trapp was given a rare start in goal, and he made a number of saves throughout the game – particularly in the first half, which saw both teams waste good chances – but could do nothing to stop Gaya's equaliser at the end.
Niklas Süle and Leroy Sané returned from long-term injuries, and the latter was particularly eye-catching, causing Spain's defense plenty of trouble with his pace and trickery, although his decision-making was questionable at times.
In their second game this week, Germany take on Switzerland on Sunday.
