Can Robert Lewandowski get better in the 2020/21 season?
A treble and goals galore in all competitions that he played in, can the 2020/21 season get any better for Robert Lewandowski?
He did not score in the Champions League final. He came close but was kept at bay. Nevertheless, he still finished as a European champion with 15 goals in the competition. Combine his efforts in Bundesliga and DFB Pokal, and you have the Pole standing on 55 strikes in the 2019/20 campaign.
It makes one wonder how Lewandowski will fare in the upcoming 2020/21 season? One thing is for certain. He is not going to finish with a treble, but can add more trophies to his ranks. But completing the holy treble again would be difficult. League and cup double is a very realistic proposition but a European treble in successive years looks extremely unlikely, despite their great form.
On an individual basis, a lot can happen. Lewandowski is in the best shape of his professional career. In addition to the major championship wins, he won all the important individual awards. Lewy was recognized as the most prolific player in the Bundesliga, the DFB Cup and the Champions League.
On the European front, on Ciro Immobile’s exceptional season with Lazio kept the European Golden Boot away from his clutches. That should be his target next season. It is an achievable landmark, especially in the wake of Messi and Ronaldo’s waning prowess in front of goal.
The 32-year-old had remarkable stats, his 55 goals will ranks amongst the best seasons a forward has ever had. But what is more remarkable is how he has managed it. Lewy’s overall style of play has refined with every year and 2019/20 saw him become an all encompassing force.
It is in the details that he has improved. Not only does he lead the offensive line, but also helps in defense. His diligent pressing is what caused many backlines to stutter against Bayern Munich. The end of his career is still some years away and if Ronaldo can continue to improve at 35, there are no questions that the Polish international cannot emulate him.
At the age of 32, he is beginning to reach his prime level and there is nothing to say he cannot get better. He continues to improve year on year, and his levels have yet to drop in elite competitions.
Lewandowski has his contract with the Bavarians until June 2023. He will be 35 then. There is nothing to say that he will not see out his contract. Erling Haaland would be entering his prime by then and a repeat of a BVB poach can be on the cards.
But until then, it is safe to say the Warsaw native will continue at the Allianz Arena. Lewandowski has earned the right and he deserves it. He has been the torch bearer at the club while everyone else around him has had changing fortunes. And when that time comes, he will be regarded as the best piece of business Bayern Munich ever did.
