After narrowly escaping relegation last season, Werder Bremen were looking to make a fresh start as they took on Hertha BSC in front of 8,500 fans at the Weserstadion on Saturday.

But Florian Kohfeldt and his team didn't quite get the start to the new Bundesliga season they were hoping for and ended up losing 1-4 to Bruno Labbadia's troops.

Experienced right-back Peter Pekarik broke the deadlock after 42 minutes, slotting in the ball at the back post, before Dodi Lukebakio added a second before the break.

Things got even worse for Werder when Matheus Cunha made it 0-3 with 62 minutes on the clock. Davie Selke headed in a consolation goal in the 69th minute, scoring against his former club, but it wasn't enough to turn the game around.

Instead, Jhon Cordoba cemented the win deep into injury time, making it 4-1 on his Hertha debut.

Elsewhere, newly-promoted Stuttgart lost 2-3 to Freiburg, Arminia Bielefeld held on to a 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt, Augsburg beat Union Berlin 3-1 while Andrej Kramaric scored a hat-trick as Hoffenheim won 3-2 over FC Köln.
