Naldo: 'Schalke have learned nothing from last season'

Former Schalke 04 star Naldo was left surprised and disappointed by his ex-club's start to the new season.
Naldo has lamented the manner in which his former team Schalke 04 lost their Bundesliga opener against Bayern München last week.

After an underwhelming second half of the 2019/20 campaign, Schalke's poor form continued into the new season as they suffered an 8-0 defeat to the German champions on Matchday 1.

"I was very surprised. Schalke have learned nothing from last season. Sure, Bayern were the favorites at home, they just won the Champions League. But Schalke's performance was so poor," Naldo told Sky.

"Unfortunately, Schalke didn't show up for 90 minutes," added the 38-year-old.

On Saturday, Schalke take on another former team of his as they lock horns with Werder Bremen, who are arguably in just as much trouble, having lost their opener 1-4 to Hertha BSC after narrowly avoiding relegation last season.

"They are lacking confidence, compactness and need to be better at working together. The offense depends on the defence and vice versa. You can see that Schalke and Werder leave a lot of gaps open for their opponents. It's so easy to hit them on the counter, and scoring against them in general is too easy," said Naldo and continued:

"My recommendation is to focus on getting more compact in defense in order to get more confidence. Schalke kept playing offensively against Bayern despite being 0-4 down at half-time. That was stupid."
