Manuel Baum reportedly leading the race to succeed David Wagner as Schalke 04 coach

Former Augsburg coach Manuel Baum is said to be leading the race to succeed David Wagner as Schalke 04 coach.
Manuel Baum is the favorite to be appointed Schalke 04 coach following the dismissal of David Wagner on Sunday, Sky Germany claims.

Bild claims the current Germany U18 coach, who has previously coached FC Augsburg in the Bundesliga, was spotted in Gelsenkirchen on Saturday, watching Schalke's under-23 play a Regionalliga game.

If Schalke haven't found Wagner's replacement by Wednesday, an interim coach will be in charge of the team against RB Leipzig on Saturday, according to Kicker.

In any case, finding the right candidate is more important that making a quick decision, Schalke head of sport Jochen Schneider has underlined.

"It's not about getting a big name. It's about what type of coach this team needs. That's what we scan the candidates for. Quality is more important than speed when it comes to making this decision," Schneider told Bild.

Other reported candidates include Ralf Rangnick, André Breitenreiter, Valerien Ismael, Marc Wilmots, Sandro Schwarz, Dimitrios Grammozis and Alexander Zorniger.
