German footballing magazine Kicker reports that SV Werder Bremen have emphatically rejected Ajax Amsterdam's initial offer to purchase their starting no. eight.

Initia reports suggested that the tender would climb into the double-digit million range with bonus payments, but Kicker now says the comprehensive package amounted to less than €10 million.

This first overture was rejected as "unacceptable" by the Hanseaten, who themselves paid €13.5 million to bring Klaassen in from Everton in the summer of 2018.

Ajax will clearly have to make a significantly larger bid to simply ensure that talks are not cut off outright.
