Bayern head to Salzburg without Goretzka

In addition to leaving Niklas Süle at home with a positive COVID test, FC Bayern München also head east without Leon Goretzka.

Before the team boarded their flight, defender David Alaba also spoke to the media on a day in which he dominated the headlines.
FCB trainer Hans Dieter Flick confirmed to the press corps that Joshua Kimmich's preferred midfield partner Leon Goretzka will sit out Tuesday's match against RB Salzburg with calf problems.

Flick would not confirm who might pair with Kimmich, but Correntin Tolisso can be surmised as the most likely pick. Flick also confirmed that Robert Lewandowksi had rejoined the team after a "break that did him good".

With respect to the match itself, Flick expressed enthusiasm ahead facing his Austrian opponents in the first competitive meeting Bayern has ever had with the club.

"Top work is being done over there, so tomorrow should be a very intriguing game," Flick noted, "They have a lot of young and talented players along with a very modern feel for the game."

Austrian international David Alaba, who's muddled contract situation threatens to overshadow the game, made clear that he remained focused on the novel opponent.

"Their [RB Salzburg's} team have proven for years that they're not to be underestimated," Alaba told reporters, "They play good football."

UCL Champions Bayern seek to extend their unbeaten run in Europe's top club competition to 14 fixtures. RB Salzburg trainer Jesse Marsch, a rising American coaching talent who may wish to make the leap over to the Bundesliga soon, will seek to make a strong statement.
