Shades of 2019: RB Salzburg result to influence Szoboszlai sprint

Deja vu, anyone?

German footballing magazine Kicker reports that, just like last year, the fate of RB Salzburg in the UEFA Champions League will determine whether an Austrian club star is prepared to make a January move.
A summer move for Dominik Szoboszlai appears all but certain. Europe's second most prolific U21 goal-scorer (after Erling Braut Haaland) can and will make a move to a bigger club. The fact that AC Milan, Real Madrid, Arsenal, and even FC Bayern München are now expressing interest in obtaining the 20-year-old Hungarian striker increases the possibility that someone will snatch him up within a few weeks.

Szoboszlai's imminent exit has long since ceased to be a secret. The youngster and his agent maintain the luxury of taking their time, however. Much as was the case with Haaland at the same time last year, no move will meet with hasty approval. Playing time and a clearly defined role within the team must be guaranteed.

As was also the case last year, RB Salzburg's Champions League circumstances shall also play a key role. The BVB's ability to officially acquire Haaland some ten days before the transfer window opened had much to do with the ability to step up negotiations after Salzburg's elimination.

Transfermarkt.it reports that RB Leipzig remain the club prepared to bid highest for the attacking midfielder. The Saxons' current depth chart may nevertheless not grant him the guarantee starting XI spot he craves.

UCL advancement or elimination obviously influences a players thinking with regard to such matters. Szoboszlai can at least attain guarantees of a rotating starting place with a team still alive in the world's most prestigious club competition.
